Additional Information
My father, Lance Corporal Peter Hildebrand, was a gunner in the tank with Trooper CLIFFORD HENRY HAYDEN, the Driver. Dad said CLIFFORD was first out of the tank after it was hit by artillery fire, and accurate 88mm gunfire countinued to pour in.
The whole crew tried to get back to their own lines through tall wheat. CLIFFORD never made it back and his complete body was never recovered. The rest of the crew all suffered serious burns.2
