HUGH DRUMMOND VENABLES was born on Wednesday 3rd March 195 at  Lower Walton, Warrington, Lancashire, United Kingdom. He was educated at Worksop Collage, Nottinghamshire, and was his family were living at Fokfield, Helsby, Cheshire at the time of his death.

 

His citation for the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) reads:

 

'This officer has taken part in 29 sorties, including a number of attacks on airfields in Holland, Belgium and France. In attacks on lines of communications and instllations Flight Lieutenant Venables has damaged numerous locomotives storage tanks by machine gun fire. His inspiring leadership, great ability and outstanding devotion to duty have contributed materially to the high standard of operational efficiency of his flight.'1
